Welcome
to the Long-Term English Center, a premier English language institute
situated in the hub of downtown Shantou, a seaside tourist city!
Whether you are a prospective student or a foreign teacher contemplating
teaching here, I want to congratulate you for coming to the right
place, at the right time, and with the right people. We believe
our school has all the best to offer in terms of a strong quality
program, a dedicated team of professionals, and a flexible, honest,
trust-worthy management.
Our
campus boasts a spacious, state-of-the-art classroom building
covering more than 1000 square meters. It is equipped with air-conditioning,
bright wall-to-wall windows, library, audio-visual aids, student
dorm and canteen. The current enrolment is well over 200 students,
both full-time and part-time. For maximum student-teacher interaction,
class size is typically 15 and no more. Students are placed in
various classes such as Cambridge Business English (Beginning
& Intermediate), Conversational English (Level 1 & 2),
English for Children, and an Intensive Summer Program for high
school students. On top of that, a summer camp for small children
is now offering a complete program of English songs, riddles,
games, arts and crafts, including field trips to various local
parks and tourist spots. So far, the summer camp has been most
popular with youngsters wanting to learn English in a fun, restful
and playful environment.
Faculty
Our
faculty combines local teachers and native speakers from the United
States, Canada, and Britain. More important, some of our courses
are taught by American professors from Shantou University. We
believe a strong faculty is the key to the success of our school.
The high student retention rate speaks well of the quality of

How
We Teach
The
goal of our teaching is to develop student communicative competency.
We at Long-Term believe in an interactive, context-based, task-driven
approach and deem it paramount for students to use English in
a functional manner. This approach requires more than traditional
wisdom in material and curriculum development. Our faculty uses
textbooks as a springboard to a broad range of topics. In the
process, we integrate skills in reading, writing, speaking, and
listening with communicative competency as the overriding principal.
Thus we focus on fluency, meaning, language in context, oral skills
and casual registers. We emphasize context over isolated linguistic
forms, communication and understanding over grammaticality. Students
are engaged in interactive and fun activities such as games, role-play,
pair work, debate, story-telling, and group work. We find our
students learn best when they see the value and power of language
instantly through a communicative approach.
Business
English
Students
at our training center come from diverse backgrounds. Adults are
generally young professionals working in local joint-ventures,
foreign companies or government. They are mostly college-educated
and eager to learn in order to further their career. The adult
curriculum features an emphasis on business English. In addition
to improving their general competency, we focus on English as
used in a corporate setting. Students are trained to use not only
the proper vocabulary, terms and jargon but also the proper style,
etiquette, tone, and voice as required in a formal business environment.
Students will learn what to say and how to say on a full range
of business topics including price quotation and negotiation,
client relations, marketing, sales, product development, custom
service, quality control, and service/product delivery. Students
are trained to be business-savvy as they speak and write English.
English
for Youngsters
Another
component of our program is the young adults, aged from 10 to
15. In this program, we combine teaching with a whole series of
fun activities. We believe a relaxed, western style of teaching
and a sense of humor work the best for this age group. As such,
we view English not as a serious academic subject. Rather, we
make students see English as a tool to explore the world, to experience
joys of life, and discover fruits in the garden, trees in the
forest, and birds in the sky. Each class turns into an experience
of adventure as we lead students across cultures and territories.
In working with children, we purposefully inspire students with
a sense of wonder, an abundance of humor and wit, a thirst for
knowledge and learning. In fact, we consider dynamics is essential
for all classes and we encourage teachers to tie jokes, stories,
and puns into the daily routines of teaching. Whether for children
or adults, a sense of humor helps a great deal to ensure an enjoyable
learning environment and interested and attentive students.
English
Saloon
An
interesting highlight at the Center is the English Saloon hosted
by foreign teachers. The program is offered twice a week for different
audiences on the weekend. The Saturday Saloon is for adults whereas
the Sunday is for children. Topics touch on culture, customs,
world events, music, sports, fashion, and travel. If you are interested,
we invite you to sign up early in advance because the Saloon is
popular and usually has a full house every weekend!
Other
Languages
In
addition to the English program, our center also offers courses
in French, Japanese, Korean at the beginning, intermediate, and
advanced levels. You are invited to make inquiries and we will
be happy to assess your needs and assign you to the appropriate
level. For this program, we offer students the same fine quality
and customer satisfaction.

China between those who know English and those who don't. Nobody
